New Brunswick Legislative Assembly, Friday 6 June 2025
On this Friday sitting of the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly, members delivered statements on domestic violence prevention legislation, the plight of vulnerable seniors stuck in hospital transitional wards, and the need to address the problematic Simms Corner intersection in Saint John West.
Members' Statements
Intimate Partner Violence Legislation (Colette's Law) and Domestic Violence as an Epidemic
Mr. Austin
Mr. Austin recalled introducing his 2022 Disclosure to Protect Against Intimate Partner Violence Act, known locally as Colette's Law, which allows individuals to receive confidential risk assessments in new relationships, and welcomed government support for a motion declaring domestic violence in New Brunswick an epidemic.
Vulnerable Seniors in Hospital Transitional Wards
Mr. Coon
Mr. Coon criticized the slow effort to move vulnerable seniors from inadequately staffed hospital transitional wards into long-term care, citing a former constituent with dementia who has lived in the Oromocto hospital transition ward for a year and is often restrained, and called for necessary resources for the hospital.
Simms Corner Intersection in Saint John West
Ms. Wilcott
Ms. Wilcott described Simms Corner as a long-standing safety frustration for Saint John West residents and praised the Premier for raising the intersection with the Prime Minister and advocating for federal funding for a multimillion-dollar collaborative redevelopment as the area becomes an international trade corridor.
